Preamble

Non-destructive Evaluation is presently an indispensable tool in all industries, finding applications right from raw material to retirement of a component or plant.    NDT evolved as a qualitative tool in the early 20th century.  Except for radiography  which  started as an imaging  method, practically all the other methods relied on  signals and their  interpretation.  This made  interpretations  very subjective.  Thus till the 1950s and 1960s radiography was the most popular  and widely  used method.  With the  advances in  sensors  instrumentation, information technology and availability  of computational and processing techniques in the 1980’s and 1990’s there  has been a paradigm shift.  Many of the NDT techniques transformed  themselves into imaging methods and NDE became quantitative, proving to be  an aid not  only for  QA personnel but also for designers  by  providing  reliable  engineering parameters. NDE methods which have made tremendous advances  during  the last ten years include radiography/CT, ultrasonics, thermal imaging, eddy current testing and micro wave and terahertz imaging.   Simulation and modelling is also an area that has attracted intense attention.  Over the last decade, the ability to simulate the results of NDE has made major strides. A number of tools have been developed that can predict accurately the results of rather practical measurements made on parts with complex geometries and material properties.  When NDE simulations are validated and integrated into a process, apart from reliability, substantial cost benefits can be achieved in the entire product cycle.

This workshop will comprise a blend of overviews of imaging techniques such digital industrial radiography thermal imaging, electromagnetics and ultrasonics, coupled with specific industrial applications including power/energy, aerospace, automobile, security and cultural heritage in three sessions.  The fourth session will dwell on frontiers of imaging and possible research directions.

The target audience is of students, researchers, NDT professionals, service providers, scientists, academicians, design and manufacturing engineers, welding and corrosion inspectors, and maintenance personnel, Quality Assurance personnel, QA and NDE managers and personnel in engineering, process, aerospace, automobile industries, inspection and regulatory authorities who can enrich themselves through this workshop.
